When involved in our day to day activities, it can be difficult to stop, take some distance, and have a complete view of the situation. But if need be we could do so pretty easily. Take a day off site, alone of with your team to reflect on different issues you may have.
Sometimes though it is important to have more than just some time to reflect or to receive a report on an analysis of the situation. You need candid advisors who will (since they are outsiders) give you the real picture of the situation. There is nothing worse than relying on people that will not give you their direct and honest opinion, but if they are directly reporting to you … who can blame them to not be franc.
I cannot defend this point as well as Bob Sutton in ?his blog post : ?
Why a CEO Needs a Candid Advisor from OUTSIDE the Organization
